The Las Vegas Convention Sands center is host to many conventions every year. Some conventions are huge with as many as 100,000 people attending, while others will be less than 100. The convention center has facilities to handle them all, however the smaller conventions gravitate to the hotels while the big ones will use all of the space at the convention center as well as much of the hotel based convention space.
The Las Vegas Convention Sands area is surrounded by more than 4,000 suites at The Venetian, with another 40,000 hotel rooms within a ten-minute walk of the complex to accommodate even the largest of trade show audiences. The Sands Expo offers an additional 1.2 million square feet of show floor and meeting space adjacent to The Venetian Congress Center. Las Vegas is very market oriented. When the hotel fills up, as in a large convention, the rates go up. Sometimes you can find rates as low as $79 during an off week, and the following week they will be over $500 for a the same room for one night. It is always a good idea to book early and to shop around a bit to find reasonable rates. Small conventions may fill up one hotel causing the rates to rise and the next one is empty!
Large conventions will also have special transportation arrangements. When there is a big one such as the NAB held at the convention center and the Sands Expo, special buses are put on to take convention goers to and from the hotels. You can also take advantage of the new monorail that runs from many of the hotels to the rear of the Las Vegas Convention Sands Expo.
