Poker Rules

One of the first poker rules that all players must know is in fact “know the rules of the poker game you are playing”. Your fellow players will get very annoyed with you if you break the rules either knowingly or unknowingly. At some poker tables you may asked to automatically forfeit your hand and any money you have wagered to that point even if you have a winning hand. During a friendly game most players will tolerate an honest mistake, however if there is significant money involved, even they will not be too happy with your errors.

One of the first steps regarding poker rules is that all players should get to know all of the poker hands and which set of cards beats another set of cards. Knowing when to bet and when to wait is also an important general rule. Basically you wait until the player to your right has finished betting on his or her hand and then it is your turn to place a wager or withdraw from that poker hand. Every game can be a bit different, so it is always a good idea to ask your fellow players before the game starts if there are any changes to the regular games.

At first it seems that the poker rules are quite complex, however after you have been playing awhile you will realize that the game is actually quite straightforward from a mechanical playing perspective. The real game begins with the ability of players to bluff and make other players think they have a better hand than they do.

In addition to poker rules that all players should get to know, there is also poker etiquette. In some casinos the poker rules will include some comments about etiquette at the poker table. Basic etiquette requires that you respect all players, you respect the dealer, you do not use profanity at the table, you dress appropriately, you obviously do not look at another player’s cards and you do not distract other players with inappropriate noises or actions.

Every poker game you join can have different rules. Texas Holdem is different than Omaha, 7-card stud and so on. Each casino will have their house rules. Local poker games may have slightly different rules as well. The best strategy is to enquire what the poker rules are before the cards are dealt to avoid any conflict during the game.
